The MIA views Research and Innovation as an essential part of a portfolio of activities to maintain its competitive edge.

The MIA invests in industry good research and development on behalf of its members – either directly or in partnership with government and other investors.

Significant levels of funding and in-kind contributions are made to initiatives that add value to the industry across the areas of product safety and integrity, increasing automation and processing efficiencies, improving compliance and animal welfare and the development of new products.

Funding for the MIA R&D Programme is provided by The Industry Initiative Fund (IIF) through:

  • the animal products act cost recovery levy. This levy is jointly managed by the MIA and the Ministry of Primary Industries to support R&D related to food safety and market access projects; and
  • government funds via the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment to support industry good research programmes.
