Halal Services

Strategic Objective An uninterrupted, cost-efficient and credible trade in halal products |
This objective relates to halal related initiatives, including the: - Negotiation and management of halal certification contracts - Recruitment and placement of halal slaughtermen - Management of halal-related market access issues
Issues
The introduction of differing Halal standards for individual markets is becoming more widespread, creating challenges for our exporters as increasingly the interpretations of 'what is' and 'what is not' Halal differ by market. As markets become increasingly aware of and sensitive to counterfeiting and fraud, the importance of an electronic Halal certificate with a similar security level to the current SPS e-cert will further protect New Zealand's international reputation. There is not currently a full range of competitive halal certification services for all markets.
Access to a reliable pool of Halal slaughtermen raises a number of increasingly challenging issues. As the demographics of the New Zealand Muslim community has evolved, the industry is improving its recruitment processes and is actively working towards creating employment opportunities for unemployed New Zealand-resident Muslims wishing to enter the industry. With most plants located in rural areas, relocating slaughtermen to worksites that are distant from their communities and family remains a significant hurdle.
Key Priorities for 2007/2008
Secure an adequate supply of reliable halal slaughtermen to avoid disruption to member's operations
Design and cost, in conjunction with the halal certifiers (FIANZ and NZIMM) and where appropriate government, an electronic Halal certificate to enhance security and improve business efficiency
Contribute as appropriate to global initiatives to develop a universally accepted 'Halal Standard' for trade |
